Midland-based Creation Coffee named one of Michigan’s ’50 Companies to Watch’

A coffee company that got its start in Midland and has since expanded its business footprint has been recognized as one of Michigan’s 50 Companies to Watch 2022 award recipients.

Creation Coffee, owned by former Northwood University students Ben Marsh and Jacob Spence, will be honored by Michigan Celebrates Small Business (MCSB) during its 18and annual awards gala on May 3 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

Companies nominated for the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch Award must be second-stage companies, defined as having 6 to 99 full-time equivalent employees and generating between $750,000 and $50 million in annual revenue or working capital from business. investors or subsidies. Additionally, corporations must be private and headquartered in Michigan.

This isn’t the first prize that Creation Coffee has won this year. Last month, the Midland Business Alliance presented the Midland-based company with its Entrepreneur of the Year award at its annual meeting.

“We’re very grateful for much of the recognition we’ve received this year,” said Spence, who began starting the business with Marsh years ago in a garage while in college. “I think some of the contributing factors have been the expansion of our outlets and the shift from wholesale to retail in the business.”

The partners opened their first Creation Coffee Shop in Midland in November 2020, their second shop in Mount Pleasant in February 2022, and this month opened a new cafe in Saginaw Township.

“We’re really excited to bring our coffee experience to these communities and be able to serve more people,” Spence said. “Our mission as a company is to create exceptional coffees and meaningful connections with our customers and partners and to help build a better world. We are excited to expand this to more people and more communities.

When the company started, it operated exclusively as a wholesale roaster for other companies. Today, his mark is much more visible.

“We’ve grown by leaps and bounds, but the growth hasn’t been seen by the mainstream,” Spence explained. “We started out as a business that operated mostly behind the scenes, supplying other businesses. Now that we have our own cafes, people are seeing our growth in the open. (And) our wholesale business is still thriving. We supply coffee, syrups and teas to more than 100 coffee companies across the country.”

MCSB officials expect more than 800 guests to share in the success of this year’s winners, such as Creation Coffee.

“MCSB has always prided itself on its spirit of collaboration and celebration,” said Jennifer Deamud, Chair of MCSB’s Board of Directors. “We love seeing our winners celebrate each other’s success and share this incredible moment in each winner’s journey. It’s true, success is best when it’s shared.

Creation Coffee, Spence said, strives for coffee perfection by sourcing exclusively specialty-grade coffees that are sustainably grown and responsibly sourced. Spence and Marsh became coffee connoisseurs soon after college, and they’ve been on a mission ever since to spread the joy of enjoying a good cup of java with family and friends.

Creation Coffee’s Midland location is located at 5023 Eastman Avenue. Its new location in Saginaw Township is at 2575 Tittabawassee Road, and its Mount Pleasant retail cafe is at 914 Pickard.

“We’re excited about what’s to come at Creation Coffee,” Spence said. “We are proud of our new locations and like to better serve our community through them.”
